Guide to Eye Cataracts

by Franchis Adam

A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. Most cataracts are related to aging. Cataracts are very common in older people. By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery.

A cataract can occur in either or both eyes. It cannot spread from one eye to the other.

Symptoms and Signs

A cataract starts out small and at first has little effect on your vision. You may notice that your vision is blurred a little, like looking through a cloudy piece of glass or viewing an impressionist painting. A cataract may make light from the sun or a lamp seem too bright or glaring. Or you may notice when you drive at night that the oncoming headlights cause more glare than before. Colors may not appear as bright as they once did.

The type of cataract you have will affect exactly which symptoms you experience and how soon they will occur. When a nuclear cataract first develops it can bring about a temporary improvement in your near vision, called "second sight." Unfortunately, the improved vision is short-lived and will disappear as the cataract worsens. Meanwhile, a subcapsular cataract may not produce any symptoms until it's well-developed.

If you think you have a cataract, see an eye doctor for an exam to find out for sure.

• Blurry vision • Colors that seem faded • Glare • Not being able to see well at night • Double vision • Frequent prescription changes in your eye wear

Cataract Causes

The lens is made mostly of water and protein. Specific proteins within the lens are responsible for maintaining its clarity. Over many years, the structures of these lens proteins are altered, ultimately leading to a gradual clouding of the lens. Rarely, cataracts can present at birth or in early childhood as a result of hereditary enzyme defects, and severe trauma to the eye, eye surgery, or intraocular inflammation can also cause cataracts to occur earlier in life. Other factors that may lead to development of cataracts at an earlier age include excessive ultraviolet-light exposure, diabetes, smoking, or the use of certain medications, such as oral, topical, or inhaled steroids. Other medications that are more weakly associated with cataracts include the long-term use of statins and phenothiazines.

Treatment

If you have cataracts, you may find that your vision is still good enough for you to get along fine with glasses or contact lenses and that surgery isn't required. The time to consider treatment is if your vision has become noticeably worse, can't be corrected with a change in your prescription lenses and this is interfering with your everyday activities such as work and hobbies. Left untreated, your lens may eventually become very cloudy so that it's impossible to see any detail at all, although you will always be able to see some light.

Self-help

Wearing glasses may improve your vision if your cataract is in the early stages of development, but your cataract will probably get worse over time so this will only provide a temporary solution.

There is no known way to prevent cataracts that develop as a result of getting older.

Medicines

So far, no medication or diet has been found to slow down the growth of cataracts, and there is no medication that can clear a clouded lens.

Surgery

Surgical removal of your cataract is the only way to restore or maintain your vision. This involves replacing your cloudy lens with an artificial one. The most common technique is called phacoemulsification. This is typically performed under local anaesthetic. This completely blocks the feeling from the eye area and you will stay awake during the operation. You will normally be allowed home the same day. For more information, see Related topics.

Cultivating Gratitude as a Mom: Shifting the Lens through which You View your Life

by Amy E. Willard

When you stop to think about your life, what lens do you typically use to view it? If you're stressed out, frustrated, and discouraged, perhaps it's time to switch lenses and adopt an attitude of gratitude in your life. As you read this article, keep in mind these three important benefits of cultivating gratitude:

1) You start to notice the things in your life that are working, that are pretty great right now. 2) You begin to attract more of what you do want because your focus has shifted. 3) You will feel more peace and contentment with your life, exactly as it is.

It's very common, especially in these hectic and stressful times, for moms to feel like nothing is going right. You look around, and all you see is the chaos. You get together with other moms, and everyone complains about how bad things are. You become so accustomed to focusing on what's wrong, on what's not working, that you miss out on the opportunities to notice what is working in your life. This is where gratitude comes in.

Gratitude can be a very powerful habit when it's practiced on a regular basis. That's why I am asking you to consider changing the lens through which you view your life. Just like when a person gets a different prescription for their glasses or contact lenses, when you shift to a lens of gratitude you will start to see your world differently. And, over time, as you continue with this new "prescription", you will experience amazing results.

You can start changing your perspective this very moment, no matter what's going on in your life. Wherever you are, take a moment to look around and find something for which you can be grateful. For example, whereas you may have zeroed in on the piles of clutter on your desk, now you can give thanks for your computer and for internet access. Or perhaps you always notice the shoes that are left in the hallway, but this time you make a shift to feeling grateful that your children hang up their coats everyday. Or maybe you feel like there's never enough time for everything that you need to do; you're working, taking care of your children, and also taking some classes for a degree. You can continue to sit with that frustration, of there not being more time. Or you can shift your focus to appreciating that you have options in your life, and noticing all of the choices that are available to you.

Can you feel the difference? And what's really amazing is that nothing has actually changed on the outside, but because of this inner shift you will begin to feel different. You will experience more peace and contentment with your life, just as it is. This inner shift can bring you immediate relief, and over the long term you will actually attract more of what you want because your focus has changed. You are more conscious of what you do want in your life, you're noticing and appreciating what's already working, and more of that will be sent your way.

It takes time to really develop this attitude of gratitude, especially when your default mode of seeing the world is so ingrained. I encourage you to start small, and to give yourself the opportunity to gradually move into the process. You can begin by asking yourself some questions: What is it about your life, that is working right now, that you can start to notice? What about your kids is absolutely wonderful, right now, today? What about your home? Do you have healthy food to eat? I'm sure you're getting the idea. And, just like with any habit, the more you practice, the easier and more natural it becomes.

Over the next few days, I invite you to notice at least 3 things in your life that are working. Be grateful and offer appreciation for these. Then check in with how you're feeling to see if anything has shifted in you. You will more than likely start to notice a difference, and the people around you will notice it, too.

Eye Care For Teens

by Suzanne Hughes

One of the most important and the most beautiful organ of our body, the eye is God's gift to us. It is imperative that we take adequate care of it right throughout our lives. However, it is common to see teenagers not taking enough care of their eyes unless there is some noticeable abnormality.

Today more than ever, teenagers are always eager to try on new things. Even using contact lens in various colors as a fashion accessory has become quite common. Though using contact lens is not really a bad idea, teenagers should take care of various aspects of their lens and eye health, including cleaning and rinsing the lenses without fail and storing them in a proper place. This ensures the contact lenses and thus the eyes are protected from bacterial and other infections.

Other important points to note are:

1) Children and teens are prone to ultra violet radiation that is caused due to exposure to the harmful rays of the sun. IN fact, glasses are even available with UV block or coating that may or may not offer complete protection. So it becomes all the more important for teens to pay attention towards eye care by using proper eyeglasses and other eye wear.

2) Children often have larger pupils compared to their parents. Their eyes are therefore exposed to more light. Since they are outdoors most of the time their eyes are exposed to light much more than an average adult.

3) A recent survey states that 80% of our lifetime exposure to ultraviolet rays occurs by the age of 18 and the annual dose of teens and young children is three times that of adults. It is also observed that short term damage is very hard to be noticed but if they are left untreated may lead to irreversible long term eye damage.

4) Children and teens require maximum eye protection. They can use the special UV blocking glasses when they go out in the sun as clinical studies show that these glasses minimize the risk of eye disorders.

5) Long term exposure to ultra violet radiation can increase the risk associated with cataracts and therefore must be consciously avoided. Direct exposure to sun light is however based on various environmental conditions like altitude and the geography of the region and also on personal factors like the extent and nature of outdoor activities.

6) You can use sunglasses even while driving to minimize the risk of exposure further. Some teenagers use sunglasses in order to look fashionable, but these actually help in protecting their eyes from the bright sunlight and also from dust and environmental pollution. You can choose from a large variety of sunglasses in different designs, colors and sizes.

7) Another aspect to be considered is the diet followed by teens. They need to have a proper diet comprising of vitamin, calcium and mineral supplements that provides them with the necessary nutrition required for healthy eyes. Follow these tips and you will have a pair of glowing and healthy eyes.

Regular eye check ups at least once in six months can be of great use. They can detect major defects at an early stage which might have not be visible otherwise.

How Vision Exercises Can Restore Your Natural Eyesight

L Crittenden

A significant portion of our population suffers from some form of eyesight defect. The most widely known are nearsightedness, farsightedness or hyperopis, and presbyopia(also referred to as old age sight).

If you visit your Opthalmologist with one of these defects, you are likely to be prescribed one of the following treatments: Glasses, contacts lenses, or corrective surgery (if you have the money). However there is an alternative way to improve eyesight naturally, although the world of medicine has turned its back on it. This method includes effortless vision exercises that are to be carried out daily, which eventually correct vision problems like the ones mentioned above. In this article we will be discussing how to improve eyesight naturally through effectively providing your eyes exercise.

Before we look at how you can improve your eyesight naturally, lets just review some of the conventional treatments and how effective they are at improving eyesight. We'll start with glasses.

Glasses temporarily correct vision by helping the eye focus light rays appropriately. They do this by focusing the light rays on the retina (the area at the back of the eyeball), this assures a clear image is formed, if light rays do not focus on the retina the result is a blurred image. The type of glasses you will be prescribed depends on your eye problem.

Glasses are very good at treating the causes of eye problems (i.e. blurred vision), however they do not cure cause, and as a result your vision will not grow stronger, and you will likely need to buy stronger glasses every couple of years. Not everyone likes to wear glass, some prefer to wear contact lenses; which brings us to another standard method for poor vision treatment.
Contact lenses - Contact lenses are thin see-through discs that sit on the cornea. They work in the same way glasses do, but they have the advantage of being so small that they fit on the cornea. There is a special type of contact lens called a Corneal Reshaping Lens, it is special because rather than just dealing with the symptoms of poor vision like glasses and other contact lenses, it actually works on the cause. Corneal Reshaping lenses as the name suggests actually reshape the cornea, so you can see without contact lenses, however this effect is only temporary.
Although Lasik is a very popular alternative, it is cost prohibitive to many people, especially in today's difficult economic environment. A Lasik procedure does not always provide a perfect outcome either. I personally had Lasik five years ago, and I still require reading glasses for most types of reading.

A brief history of the the method to improve vision naturally through vision exercises is outlined below:
The Bates Method - Many people claim to have improved there vision significantly using this natural method based on vision exercises. It was developed by Dr William Bates (1860-1931), he was a practitioner of eyesight improvement. He was a graduate of Cornell University and of the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York.

Through constant experimentation on his patients, Bates developed the Bates method which addresses the cause of bad eyesight and how to overcome it without glasses, contacts, or Lasik. He developed some simple exercises and principles in the 1920's. All though his methods were largely discounted by the world of medicine the Bates method is still practiced to this day throughout the world. If you are trying to improve eyesight naturally it would be a good idea to look into vision exercises as a way to naturally improve your eyesight.

Many people ask how immediately the effects of providing your eyes exercise "kick in". Here are some factors that determine the time ordinarily taken to restore eyesight...Initially, how old are you, and what condition do you have? If you are over 40 and you have Macular Degeneration, then you are different from someone who is in their twenties, and with a rare Myopia. Although it is very difficult to find any sort of published statistics on this, generally speaking, the more severe the fundamental eye problem , the longer the eye rehabilitation period And , while Myopia (Shortsightedness) & Hyperopia (Longsightedness) are most common ones, there are numerous other conditions out there, such as Astigmatism, Presbyopia, Strabismus, Amblyopia (aka Lazy Eye), Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), and so on. Eye exercises help cure all of these conditions, but the time it takes to full eyesight restoration may differ for each one.

Especially in today's economic climate, before you make a major investment in Lasik, or even glasses or contacts, visit our site and learn more about the cheaper, more affordable benefits of vision exercises.

Popular Special Effects Lenses

by A. Nutt

While many people wear contact lenses to correct vision problems, that`s not the only reason to wear them. Special effects lenses were originally made popular in movies, but are now available to the everyday consumer.

Which lenses are the most popular? Let`s take a look.

Colored Contacts Without a doubt, the most popular special effects lenses are also the simplest. These contacts just change the color of your eyes and are tremendously popular among young people in particular who enjoy testing new eye colors.

These colored contacts tend to work best with light colored eyes (blue, grey, green, etc.) but there are also versions created specifically for darker eyes that need more pigment. You can use common eye colors, like blue or green or you can try something a little creepier, perhaps red or yellow. A fun way to use colored lenses is to wear just one at a time, leaving the other eye natural.

Evil Eyes If you want something a little more sinister than just the eye color change, look for lenses that change the shape of your pupil. This can be a fun way to amp up the fear factor. These types of contacts come with vertical slit pupils, like a cat eye. You can usually buy them in a variety of colors, with red and yellow being the most common. These lenses need to be put in just so, however, to ensure that the pupil is facing the right way.

Party On If you hit the dance floor on a regular basis, then black light eyes are a must have. They glow in the black light and create a very interesting effect for parties and raves. These are still fairly new, but already extremely popular and in demand.

Movie Effects With movies like Twilight being so popular, vampire contacts and wolf lenses are all the rage. Vampire contacts are usually red, but allow for the pupil in the center, while a wolf eye is animal like and brown with streaks. These aren`t the only movie effect lenses you can get, though. Look for your favorite horror movie brought to life in your eyes with contacts that mimic the effects from movies like Hellraiser, Tempest and Jeepers Creepers.

There are plenty of options to turn you into the monster of your dreams.

White While these could technically be labeled as colored lenses, the fact is that white contact lenses actually cover up any existing color and make your eyes a fun white color, essentially eliminating the color. This type of contact lens is particularly popular if you are into zombies and want the blank, undead look.

Pictures While not quite as common as colored contact lenses, these fun lenses are found everywhere just the same. They come with images of everything from spiders, roaches or skulls on them to flowers, smiley faces and swirls. Having a picture in your eye can be a fun way to grab people`s attention and the variety of images available means that each person can choose the style that suits their personality.

Special effects contact lenses can be a fun way to change your look . . . subtly or in a rather obvious manner. They are also ideal for costume parties and Halloween when you need those special vampire eyes. The price tag can be a little high, especially if you are going for handpainted, so keep that in mind when buying for a special occasion.

These lenses aren`t meant for long term use usually, so you`ll need to take them out and clean them as you would with regular contacts before using again. With proper care, specialty lenses can last up to 4-5 months.

All You Need To Know About Pink Eye

by Dr. Rose Windale

When the clear membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inner surface covering the eyelids (otherwise known as the conjunctiva) becomes inflammed, then it is called pink eye, pinkeye or conjunctivitis. The conjunctiva can sometimes be infected by bacteria, viruses, allergens, irritants and toxins. Various diseases of the body may also affect the conjunctiva. When a person has pink eye, the eyes become extremely red, not to mention that pink eye is also contagious. The causes of pink eye can either be infectious or non-infectious. The viruses that cause colds and other infections? They can likewise cause pink eye.

In fact, those bacteria that also cause sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia and gonorrhea can do the same. This makes up infectious pink eye. But children in most cases acquire non-infectious pink eye. This type of pink eye is caused by allergies (hay fever) and allergens (grass, pollen, animal dander and dust mites). Chemicals such as chlorine and soaps and environmental substances like smoke and fumes can also trigger pink eye. For people who wear contact lenses, GPC or Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis, another kind of pinkeye, can also occur. Symptoms of infectious pinkeye are red watery eyes with discharge and also soreness.

Most likely, infectious pink eye spreads from one eye to the other and as the name suggests, this kind of pink eye is contagious. Non-infectious pinkeye on the other hand causes the eyes to have heavy tearing, itchiness and soreness. With non-infectious pinkeye, both eyes usually have these symptoms but this kind of conjunctivitis cannot be transmitted to another person. Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis seem to have the worst symptoms of all as it may cause intolerance to contact lens and heavy discharge in both eyes. Itching and tearing also occur when you have GPC as well as red bumps under the eyelids.

For infectious conjunctivitis, which is viral and bacterial in nature, the same treatment as with other contagious diseases is required. As with any kind of infection, antibiotics and antibiotic creams or ointments are used to treat infectious pinkeye. To get rid of the discharge, a warm wash cloth may be the simple solution. As for viral conjunctivitis, this must be warded off by the immune system and antibiotics may not be helpful. Viral conjunctivitis does not usually need medication but it is also a good idea to check with your physician as antibiotics are sometimes resorted to to prevent consequent bacterial infections.

To alleviate irritation, soreness and redness, you can use special eye drops. Allergens should be avoided in case of allergic conjunctivitis. It is advantageous if you know which allergens cause the pink eye so that you could avoid exposure to them. For allergic conjunctivitis, antihistamine and anti-inflammatory drugs are required as well as eye drops for itching and redness. Almost everybody has had conjunctivitis at one time or another. It is quite common and would disappear on its own in a week or ten days. But it is still advisable to consult your physician once you have contracted conjunctivitis or pink eye.

Pinhole eye glasses

by Randy Newman

There are many varieties of eye glasses in the market today. If you go to a major store like a mall, or Wal-Mart, you can easily get a prescription eye glasses or contact lens that come in many different styles. However, there is another kind of glasses that is not widely known which can be used to improve far sighted or near sighted problems. This kind of glasses is known as pinhole glasses. So what are pinhole glasses? Pinhole glasses are glasses with small openings that are supposed to improve the vision of the persons wearing them. They are sometimes called stenopeic glasses: stenopeic is a Greek word that means "little opening". These tiny openings or pinholes allow lesser amount of light to enter the eyes. This is similar to when you make a fist and look through the tiny opening in your fist. You can see objects clearer inside the opening that your fist makes. So this is how pinhole glasses work. Lights from outlying areas are blocked out while allowing into the eyes the lights that go into the middle part of the pupil. Refractive error is reduced and a person's vision is improved. Pinhole glasses improve vision at all distances. They cost less than prescription glasses but a little bit more than reading glasses. The wearer will notice very little glare or distortion. Pinhole glasses will work the entire lifetime and need very little maintenance.Pinhole eyeglasses come in two different styles: traditional pinholes and modern pinholes. Traditional pinholes have wider lenses with a little curvature. You can see the holes in the lens. The traditional styles do lessen the amount of ultraviolet light. On the other hand, the modern pinholes are more attractive in design with look similar to sunglasses. They provide full protection from ultraviolet light. The holes are not easily noticeable by other people.

A Good Alternative To LASIK Eye Surgery

by Jay Stockman

When it comes to refractive surgery, the two best options are LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) or PRK (photorefractive keratectomy). LASIK will result in a faster healing time, but may present more secondary complications. In addition, not all individuals are good candidates and may even suffer from serious issues post surgically if LASIK is performed. PRK is an alternative that has a longer healing period, but does not pose the same risks as LASIK. It requires more patience and therapy post surgically, but is a better procedure for individuals with thinner corneas, dryer eyes and other important factors.

PRK is performed by initially placing a ring on the surgical corneal area and filling it with alcohol to weaken the bonds of the corneal epithelium. Next, this outer corneal layer is moved aside using a surgical brush exposing the inner layers of the tissue. At this point an excimer laser is employed to ablate and reshape the inner layers of the cornea. This is the same laser used in LASIK. Upon completion of this step, a bandage contact lens is placed over the surgical area. This lens permits the re-epithelialization of the cornea. In addition, it protects the cornea and improves patient comfort. The patient should be seen frequently as long as the contact lens is on the eye to monitor healing of the abrasion, and possible infection of the wound.

The contact lens will be removed between 4-7 days once the epithelium is fully healed. In an effort to prevent infection, the individual must use a topical antibiotic such as Zymar for at least a week, and a topical steroid like FML for at least 6 weeks post operatively. The steroid will reduce the swelling, improve patient comfort and prevent scarring during this healing period. Depending on several factors, these drops may be modified if any corneal haze is present, there is over/under correction, an increase in intraocular pressure or an allergy to the drops. Further, immediately following the surgery there may be substantial discomfort; a pain reducing drop is used for 1-2 days like Xibrom is employed. It must be discontinued shortly following the procedure since it does retard the healing process.

Since the healing is slower and will be less comfortable initially, some patients may be reluctant to have this procedure. In addition, sunglasses must be worn for a full year following the surgery since UV light often will make the cornea hazy even after the healing appears to be complete. This is another distinction between PRK and LASIK.

The bottom line is that before one decides to have refractive surgery, they must be properly advised as to the benefits of all the options. Then, and only then can a truly informed decision be made. The choice should really be made by the surgeon as to which procedure would be safest and best for any patient. It should not be up to the individual based on what they would prefer. The final result is what is most important not simply how one gets there.

Contact Lens Cleaning Solutions: Everything You Need to Know

by A. Nutt

Trying to choose a contact lens cleaning solution can be a little intimidating. If you take a look at the dozens of different types and hundreds of brand names available, it`s pretty confusing at first. Knowing just what each type of fluid is for will help you make your choices. Your optometrist can also provide useful information on selecting the right cleaning solution for your particular contact lenses.

The first thing you need to know about selecting a cleaning liquid is to choose one that is formulated for the type of contact lens that you use. If you have soft lenses, be sure to buy only cleansers that are meant for soft contacts and vice versa for hard ones. By regularly cleaning your lenses, you`ll end up being able to use them longer and they will work better, without irritating your eyes.

Multi-Purpose Cleaners

These are the easiest types of cleaners to use. You only need one solution to do all the tasks, soften the lens, remove deposits, cleanse and disinfect. The only thing you have to do once the lenses have soaked is rinse them in saline solution before putting them into your eyes. It`s very simple, but not always as effective as using multi-step procedures with a different solution for each process.

Multi-purpose cleaners can be used for most of the cleaning that you do, but if you want the occasional deep clean, then you might want to do a multi-step cleansing.

Saline

Saline solution is pretty much the same as your tears, so this liquid is ideal for soaking contact lenses in when they aren`t in your eyes. The liquid keeps them supple and hydrated and won`t irritate your eyes later on. Saline is also useful for rinsing harsher chemicals off the lenses so you won`t end up with stinging eyes later on. Contact lenses do tend to dry out when left out of saline, so be sure to always have some on hand.

Hydrogen Peroxide Cleaners

You are probably familiar with hydrogen peroxide from your medicine cabinet. It is also used in some types of contact lens cleaners to help eliminate grime and mineral deposits on the lenses. Hydrogen peroxide cleansers must be carefully stored and, while they do work very well for cleaning, the chemical can also cause intense discomfort in the eye, so be sure to rinse very well before using your contacts after cleaning them with a hydrogen based product.

Enzymatic Cleansers

With any extended use contact lenses, protein from your eyes will begin to build up on them. This can cause problems if left, particularly diminished vision and later, possible scratches and infections in the eye, so it`s important to get rid of these deposits. Enzymes in enzymatic cleaners work to destroy any protein deposits and leave the lenses nice and clean. This type of cleaner is usually in tablet form and is not needed on a daily basis. Once a week or so, drop a tablet into the liquid that the contacts are soaking in and leave overnight to get rid of everything. In the morning, the lenses will be ready to be used again after rinsing.

Since contact lenses are in contact with your eyes most of the time you are awake, it`s vital that they be maintained in a clean, sterile manner. Improperly cleaned lenses are the cause of many eye infections and these can range from a minor inconvenience to actually causing blindness. As you can see, it`s certainly worth maintaining a careful cleaning schedule and using the proper cleaners for the job.

The Future is Clear

by Joshua Wasps

If you wear glasses, you will doubtless have experienced the frustration of not being able to find them, whether first thing in the morning or at some point later in the day. Changing over to contact lenses could mean that you would only have to change your visual aids once a month, saving you hours of hunting around the house as well as money in the long term.

Never again would you have to endure the awkwardness of walking into a crowded room and waiting till the steam on your glasses disappears. You'll even be able to see properly in the rain.

Imagine not having to carry two pairs of glasses everywhere you go as well as an additional pair of prescription sunglasses just to be able to see! If you chose to wear contacts instead you could buy fashionable sunglasses to pose in and still be able to see. The money you would spend buying three separate prescriptions every year counters the cost of your monthly cost of contact lens supply.

You can also get your lenses sent through the post if you run out or lose your current pair. Contact lenses online are available from Vision Direct, from whom you can request an ongoing order until your next check up - you can even change or enhance your eye colour while you are there. Most brand name sites like ASDA Contact Lenses even have a colour scheme option so why not look into which contact lenses fit your prescription?

In fact why not consider all the options your current prescription is limiting you to at this moment by visiting a specialist sunglasses expert site such as Sunglasseshut.co.uk? Looking around at all the choices open to you when you're there.

If you are thinking of making the change to contact lenses simply visit your local optician and have a full sight test so your eyesight can be assessed properly for their eligibility for lenses. Your optician will not only advise you which type of lens is best suited to you - there are now lenses which are appropriate for most common eye conditions including astigmatism - but will also guide you through the care process and how best to put them in.

Often people who have never tried contact lenses are nervous when putting them in for the first time but as long as you're with a registered Optician, you can rest assured in the knowledge that in order to qualify to dispense optics to the public, every Optician has to first learn how to put lenses in safely. Of course practise makes perfect as with all things in life, but once you have put in your lenses a few times, it will become like second nature to you and feel as easy and as comfortable as putting on your glasses currently does.

An Invisible Alternative to Glasses

by Joshua Wasps

It's reckoned that 125 million people use contact lenses everyday. For many, it's an invisible alternative to glasses, which serves the same purpose without changing the appearance of the face. Contacts provide a wider field of vision and do not steam up, as well as being more suitable for sporting activities. They are also used to help treat medical conditions, such as keratitis, which causes abrasions on the cornea which a porous, bandage contact lens can help protect against.

The earliest contact lens principle can be attributed to - who else? - Leonardo Da Vinci, but it was never intended for the purpose of correcting vision. In his Codex of the Eye, Manual D of 1508, he describes how to affect corneal power by immersing the eye in a bowl of water; the objective of his studies was to better understand the mechanisms of the eye, and how it focuses - this is called accommodation. Rene Descartes developed the idea in 1636 by filling a glass tube with water, which would then sit on the cornea. This proved impractical, however, as it would obstruct blinking, but there was at least a general understanding that refracting light in some way changed the accommodation of the eye.

In 1801, scientist Thomas Young, whilst studying accommodation, made an -eyecup- filled with liquid, which could be regarded as the forebear of the modern contact lens. Again, the device could not be used as a vision aid, and it was not until 1887 that F.E. Muller, a German glassblower, produced the first lens that could be tolerated by the eye. His design rested on the rim around the cornea, and was made from brown glass, but the lenses were unwieldy and could only be worn for a few hours.

Glass-blown lenses remained the only form of contact lens until the development of Perspex in the 1930's. William Feinbloom, an optometrist, introduced a glass/Perspex combination lens, which was much lighter and more comfortable and convenient than the pure glass lenses.

Technology improved over the next thirty years to allow smaller, corneal lenses (rather than early designs which covered the entire surface of the eye), and by the 60's, contact lenses had gained mass appeal as a viable alternative to spectacles. However, these early Perspex lenses allowed no oxygen to get through to the cornea, which, whilst improving vision, could have an adverse clinical effect on the health of the eye. Permeable designs were developed throughout the 70's and 80's, but the biggest breakthrough was the introduction of the soft lens, by Czech chemist Otto Wichterle. These were much more comfortable, and before long superceded the Perspex and glass lenses. More recently, silicone hydrogels have been used in the manufacture of even more comfortable, oxygen-permeable lenses.

Aching Eyes - Eye Care Tips, Tricks and Advice

by Franchis Adam

Eye pain is often described as burning, sharp, dull, gritty, a feeling of "something in my eye," aching, throbbing, or stabbing. Sometimes eye pain is confused with symptoms, such as a headache or sinus pain.
Eye pain is a common reason for people to seek medical care from their doctor (or an ophthalmologist, a specialist who deals only with eyes).
Home Remedies
• Mix one part of rose water and one part of lime juice. Store in a bottle and use it as an eye drop.
• Powder equal quantities of liquorice and cumin (jeera). Take ¼ teaspoon every day along with 1 teaspoon honey for a month.
• Using drops of eyebright herb are also beneficial for the eye conditions.
Prevention
• If you view computer monitors or television screens for long periods at a time, take breaks regularly to alleviate the strain on your eyes.
• Strive to avoid regular use of contact lenses.
• Contact lens users: Use a lubricant eye drop such as Soothe prior to inserting your lenses and then again after they are removed.

Contact Lens Wearing Cat

by Ben Thiesmann

The Isle of Wight recently accomplished something that's never been done before. A 15 year old cat named Ernest received a set of contact lenses to correct a vision problem. Ernest, a popular resident at the RSPCA, had problems with the lids of its eyes being turned inside. This caused scratching on his eye balls that effectively hurt his vision.

Employees at the RSPCA said his eyes used to be shut but now with the help from contact lenses, he's much more comfortable and able to keep his eyes open. Following standard contact lens protocal, volunteers will clean and change Ernest's contact lenses every few weeks.

While this new break through might eventually help animals around the globe, it's not recommended to start bringing your pets with you to the opticians.

How Long Can You Leave Contact Lenses in Their Case For?

by A. Nutt

It doesn't matter what kind of contact lens you wear, there are times in which you have to take them out. How often you have to take them out of your eyes depends on what kind of contact lenses you have. For example, you may have a daily wear contact lens that requires you to dispose of them daily. Then again, you may have an extended wear contact lens that doesn't require you to take them out for a month.
The different kinds of contacts

First, it is a good idea to discuss the different kinds of contacts. As mentioned before, there are daily contact lenses that you throw away daily. Those should not have to be put into a contact lens case. This is unless you need to take them out at some point during the day. However, you don't need to take them out for part of the day and then put them back in the next day so that you get an entire day's wear out of them. They're daily, so just throw them away.

There are also contacts that you wear for a week and throw away at the end of that week. These are most likely contacts that you're going to take out at the end of the day before you go to bed. You can keep them in your case overnight. If you don't feel like wearing them the next day, you can leave them in their case and wear your eyeglasses. The same applies to those contact lenses that you throw away every two weeks and monthly contacts. You take them out every night and put them back in the next morning.

The next contact lens on the list involves extended wear contact lenses. These are the contacts that you can wear for an entire month before taking them out. However, you don't have to take them out, which means there is no reason for the case. When the 30 days are up, they simply go into the trash can and nowhere else. They should not go to your contact lens case for anything. The only time that should happen is if you have to take them out at some point during your 30 day wear period.

How long to leave them in their case

Well, you have read that there are contact lenses you wear and throw away after wear. Those are the daily contact lenses and the extended wear that you will throw away after a month. As stated before, you may not have to put those in a case at all unless you have to take them out sometime during your wear period.

As for your others, you simply store them overnight. But what do you do if something happens that requires you to take them out for a prolonged period of time? What if you're wearing extended wear contacts and you don't complete the time in which you are to wear them? What do you do?

Truthfully, contact lenses can remain in their case for six months to a year. It is just a matter of whether or not you want to do something like that. To keep yourself on a schedule, it is ideal to throw away daily contact lenses. However, you may find yourself in a situation where you were only able to wear a weekly contact for a day. Does that mean you can put it in your case and put it back in next week? That shouldn't be an issue. If you had an infection of some sort, it may be a good idea to throw it away, though. The same rule applies to all of the different kinds of contact lenses. But if you're more than halfway through your wear period, go ahead and throw them away.

A Holistic Approach is Essential For Eye Care For Teens

Suzanne Hughes

Like your heart and your brain, your eyes too are put to use from the moment your are born and continue to serve you until you die. Ignore eye care at your own peril.

Despite the vital function performed by the eyes in our life, most of us, especially teenagers, do not take good care of their eyes. Eye care for teens is not merely treating the eye in case of any disease. It means taking regular and proper care of the eye. Most teens tend to ignore that their eye needs, not caring for them unless they suffer from an eye ailment. And such an attitude can cause a lot of harm to the eye.

For example, it is an established fact that teenagers are at higher risk from ultra violent radiation of the sun. The size of the pupils of children and teenagers are bigger as compared to those of adults. Hence, their exposure to light is comparatively higher.

Further, as compared to adults, teens spend more time in the sun. And sunglasses, if worn and even if coated with UV block, do not provide adequate protection. Hence, eye care for teens must be given top priority.

Recent surveys indicate that proper eye care for teens should not be ignored. In fact, more than three quarters exposure of our lifetime UV exposure is completed by the time we are 18 years old. Hence UV blocking glasses and contact lenses provide additional protection to teenagers.

Damage due to exposure to UV rays, if not treated, takes place over the long term only. Exposure to UV rays leads to serious complications like cataract. If you want to avoid such complications in the long term, take measures to protect your eyes today.

It has been seen that the teenagers treat contact lens more as a fashion accessory and less as protection for their eyes. While this is not bad per se, one must never sacrifice protection just to look stylish. Even if you are using contact lens to look stylish, you must maintain it properly. It must be cleaned, rinsed and stored in the proper manner. Ignoring these aspects will enhance the risk of infections.

Merely buying sunglasses or contact lenses is of no use if you omit to wear them when outdoors. The sunglasses and contact lenses protect you from UV Rays, Damage due to bright sunlight, Dust and other Air pollutants. Today, sunglasses are available in various designs, colors and sizes. Choose one that fits you best.

You must combine the use of sunglasses and contacts with other measures like:

• A proper, balance and nutritious diet. The diet must contain the required vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.

• Regular physical exercise. Obesity will cause eye complications in the long run. Even other wise, staying fit is the best way to avoid all health complications.

• Regular eye check-up. Visit your doctor once in six months to detect problems early. Always remember that prevention is better than cure.

LASIK Surgery: A Good Investment

by Amanda Tobin

In considering LASIK surgery , many of the benefits are obvious. Being able to wake up in the middle of the night and look at your clock, your book, or even your spouse without fumbling for your glasses. No broken frames, scratched lenses, or lost glasses. No crawling around on the floor looking for a lost contact, no risk of bacterial infection (and the exacting cleaning regime), or constantly buying and replacing disposable lenses.

But what many people don't consider is that, although LASIK involves an initial outlay of a significant amount of money, it may save money over time. That's right, LASIK surgery is actually cheaper than glasses and contacts.

LASIK: Long-Term Benefits

The benefit that makes LASIK cheaper than glasses and contacts is longevity. If you have LASIK when you are 25, you can easily expect 15 years of corrected vision before presbyopia begins to set in, requiring the use of reading glasses or further corrective procedures . The average cost of LASIK is about $1500 per eye, or $3000 if you need both eyes corrected. What is the cost of glasses or contacts for 15 years of corrected vision?

If you use daily disposable contacts, you might be able to get them for as little as $0.66 per each, or $1.32 / day. Over 15 years that adds up to over $7200, or 2.4 times the cost of LASIK! Of course, you can cheat a little bit, right, and not change your disposables every day. Doing so increases the risk of vision-threatening infections, and you'd have to wear every lens for three days to save money over LASIK.

But glasses are definitely cheaper, right? If you buy mid-priced lenses (assuming you don't need high index lenses, which can be as much as 2.5 times as expensive), they may cost you about $100, and you may be able to get frames for as little as $150, if you either buy cheap frames or get them from a discount outlet. Add in the eye exam, and you're looking at around $350 all in. If you assume you only need to buy glasses every 2 years, 15 years of vision correction will cost about $2800. Hey, that's cheaper than LASIK!

Actually, no, it's not. Because LASIK is all paid for now, its cost is locked in, but eyeglasses and contacts get more expensive due to inflation. So, the glasses you buy today cost $350, but if we assume a flat inflation rate of 3 % per year--which is unrealistically low--the glasses you buy in two years will cost $371, and the ones you buy in four years will cost $393, etc. So, after 15 years, the total adjusted cost for glasses is over $3400. And the adjusted cost for contacts? 15 years from now, you can expect to pay over $747 for one year's worth of lenses, up from the $480 annual cost today.

LASIK may be expensive today, but it is clearly a good investment when compared to glasses or contact lenses.

Makeup Application that Can Bring Out the Best in Your Eyes

by Kristy Scott
Different people have different seeing abilities. Some have 20/20 vision; therefore, they can see clearly and normally. On the other hand, other people may be able to see only from afar or only at times when things are very close. These two little pair of eyes connected to our brain, ensures our vital functioning. Without it, we cannot see what we are doing. We will not be able to identify people, colors or even places. People who do not have sight have a hard time doing things as normal people do.

Aside from the physiologic importance of eyes, it also has an important role in making women beautiful. Yes, aside from the fact that the eyes are considered the window to our soul, it can contribute much too physical beauty that we always want. Smokey eyes- To do this makes you look very diva like. The color applied in here should be a mix of dark and light tones. The base should be a little bit darker than your skin tone but shimmers and contour colors should be darker than the base or could have a matter effect. Eyes are lined with a pencil; eyes are made strong with the use of black mascara; and eyebrows are well defined.

What Are the Current Fashion Trends in Designer Eyeglass Wear?

by A. Nutt

Today's eyeglasses are as diverse and colorful as any fashion accessory and they can come in a variety of shapes colors and styles. Whether or not it was the advent of the soft contact lens or that caused this evolution, one thing is for sure. People who have to pass up contacts to wear glasses don't have to worry about being fitted with unattractive frames - even bi-focal lenses have gotten an overhaul!

Gone are the boxy and unbecoming spectacles of yesteryear, replaced by frames that can compliment any face shape, with shapes sizes and hues for almost every occasion!

Aviator sunglasses

Once a male dominated territory, aviator sunglasses are now hip for women to wear too! Well known for their "wrap around" style, they were originally created to meet the needs of plane pilots in the 1920's. Now they come in a diverse range of shades and are even available by prescription. Modern aviators are even a bit sleeker than their ancestors, primarily because they no longer serve the primary need of being protective. This means that they can fit almost any facial frame.

Glasses for eveningwear

You can still be the belle of the ball and wear a pair of eye glasses. Sophisticated lenses can offer a sexy silhouette that will compliment velvet, satin, silk or lace. You may even be able to find a pair that matches a particular dress or accessories, for example, diamond studded frames can go along with diamond studded earrings and necklaces. The added appeal of wearing such glasses is that you will look both seductive and intelligent simultaneously - something that will turn heads. For men, such glasses could make them appear stately and distinguished.

Rhinestones and Funky colors

Glamour and sparkle can jazz up any outfit which is why eyeglasses that offer these accents are being bought up like hotcakes! These glasses are usually casuals and can be dressed up or down depending on the size and shape. If you are going to buy lenses that are funky or zany in style, don't spend a ton of money on them. Why? Well, you would hate to spend $300 dollars on a pair of corrective eyewear that you can only pull out with certain outfits. Fun decorative glasses should be inexpensive, unless you know you will be wearing them quite often.

Designer names and labels

Liz Claiborne, Gucci, Modo, Ray-Bans are among the many well known names on the designer eyewear market. Although bit on the pricier end, such designer eye glasses and lenses offer great comfort and classic style. When looking for eyeglasses make sure you put an emphasis on the "classic" aspect of your purchases. Trends can come and go and you would hate to pay a lot of money for something that goes out of style in less than a year.

No matter the style, the designer, or the trend, be sure that you locate and buy a pair of eye glasses that fits your face. You don't want to walk around with a pair of glasses that is too big for you. This tends to make a person look a bit owlish. Likewise, a small spectacle on a large face just looks odd.

When in doubt, have your ophthalmologist help you try on frames until you are satisfied. You may find that the ones that look and feel the best are on the higher end price wise, but their purchase will be well worth it.

It was once said that boys don't make passes at girls who wear glasses. With today's choices, a lady can fashionably correct her vision in a way that makes this outdated sentiment a thing of the past!

Vision Solutions For Correcting Eyesight

by Suzanne Hughes

Whether we are studying for long hours or working on our PCs or watching television, eyes are the foremost part that get directly affected. And this leads to their weakening. There are so many things to do and work on daily, that our eyes get stressed and with time need some help for correcting vision.
One good option for correcting the eyesight for proper vision is contact lens. Contact lenses are preferred by the people over glasses as their glasses often slide over noses, get dirtier and need cleaning, and develop fog in winter. Contact lenses are also comfortable while playing games, as they don't bounce up and down like glasses.

There are different types of contact lenses available in the marketplace. Even gift them to your loved ones as tokens of a remembrance or to celebrate a special day like Christmas or New Years, and even Thanksgiving Day or any day.

Popular types of lenses include:

Soft contact lenses - Soft contact lenses are preferred by most of the lens wearers as they contain high amounts of water rich in oxygen, passing freely through the eye. However, as the lenses are porous, they is prone to infection, hence the need to take them out at night to get disinfected.

Hard contact lenses - These lenses are made up of rigid material that is easy to clean but less comfortable than soft lenses. Hard lenses do also allow less oxygen to pass through eyes.

Rigid gas-permeable lenses - These are semi-hard lenses but provide more oxygen to the eye. An eye specialist often refers these to astigmatism patients.

Extended-wear lenses - These are special lenses that can be worn continuously without taking them out at night. These lenses offer certain conveniences like less cleaning but are permeable so the cornea gets infected easily, so use caution.

Disposable lenses - These lenses are used for certain limited periods like a day, a week or a month and then are thrown away. As these lenses are replaced regularly, there are less chances of eye infection. These lenses are made up of a thinner material and have higher water content and therefore are more comfortable for eyes.

Eyeglasses

The glasses are most commonly used by the people for correcting vision while doing daily activities. There are different types of lens used in glasses like polycarbonate or high-index lenses and regular plastic lenses. The glasses can be coated with certain coatings like ultraviolet coating or anti-reflective coating.

There are different types of frames in the market that can be used in glasses depending on the budget, material and durability. There are metal and plastic frames, available in different colors.

Buying Glasses Online

There are different online stores offering glasses at reasonable prices to the consumers. This is a fun activity that also helps the individual in selecting the glasses. You can try designer frames; for example, designer rectangular shaped frames are popular among women.

Laser Surgery

Laser eye surgery can correct common vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism permanently. It's necessary to do a follow-up procedure to further correct the vision as after surgery the eyes need to adjust to the environment.

Ways to Prevent (or at Least Slow Down) Cataracts, Macular Degeneration, Pinguecula and Pterygium Formation

UV (ultraviolet) is one of the leading causes of cataracts, macular degeneration and pterygium formation. Here is what you need to know to protect your eyes from the harmful effects of UV rays.

Sunlight is composed of light (obviously) and ultraviolet rays. The light itself does not lead to eye diseases, only UV rays do. There are three types of UV rays. UVC is blocked by the ozone layer, and therefore will not be discussed in this article.

It is highly recommended to select eyewear that will block both UVA and UVB. These glasses are labeled "UV 400". Resist the temptation to purchase "cheap" sunglasses. They typically only block around 65% of UV rays. Moreover, they are made using less-than-optimal quality lenses which can include distortion. This, in turn, can lead to eye strain, and possible headaches.

It is important to realize that ultraviolet can go through clouds, to a certain extent. Therefore, it is advised to wear UV protection, even if it is not a clear sunny day. Kids and teenagers should also wear sunglasses whenever feasible. Their eyes are still developing, making them even more susceptible to UV damage.

UV rays coming from the temporal sides can be very damaging as well. These rays are condensed by the cornea (clear layer right in front of the color of the eye) onto the nasal conjunctiva (white of the eye), facilitating pinguecula (yellow bump on the white of the eye), which can eventually lead to pterygium formation over time. A pterygium is defined as the conjunctiva growing over the cornea.

UV rays hitting the eye straight on are even more damaging, leading to cataracts (lens turning opaque, similar to looking through a very dirty windshield) and macular degeneration (loss of central vision).

There are six different ways to protect your eyes.

1. Polycarbonate lenses. This type of lens has a built-in UV-blocker, which prevents 99% of UV rays from going through. Since it is a clear lens, light will still be very bright.

2. UV-coated lenses. These lenses, made of either plastic or glass, have the same properties as polycarbonate lenses, only heavier. Furthermore, they retain a yellow hue after the coating process.

3. Clip-ons. They have to be mounted on regular glasses every time UV may be present. Clip-ons are therefore only useful to people already wearing glasses. They will block both UV and light. It is a cheaper alternative compared to buying two pairs of glasses (prescription glasses and prescription sunglasses).

4. Fit-overs. This option is also only for people already wearing glasses. Other than the fact that they do not need to be mounted on glasses, they are very similar to clip-ons. The main difference is that they block UV rays coming from the sides as well as from directly in front.

5. Transitions. These lenses go from clear to dark in the presence of UV rays. It is another option useful only to those who require prescription glasses. The main drawbacks are that it does not block UV rays coming from the sides, and that the lenses do not get very dark inside cars. This is due to the fact that the windshield blocks most of the UV rays needed to make the lenses change color.

6. Sunglasses (prescription or not). This is the best choice. Especially the wrap-around designs that block UV rays from every direction. Wrap-around designs are not indicated for those with high levels of myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) or astigmatism (cornea shaped like a football), as the curvature will induce distortion.

Polarized eyewear does not block more UV rays, but eliminates glare, for a much more comfortable experience. Polarized lenses are available for options 3,4 and 6.

To sum up, for people who do not need prescription glasses, or for those requiring a low to moderate prescription, polarized wrap-around sunglasses are the best option. Others with high prescriptions will best be protected with polarized fit-overs over their current prescription glasses, or with contact lenses combined with non-prescription polarized wrap-arounds. Since fit-overs are not very fashionable, some might prefer transitions or regular sunglasses (not wrap-arounds) as an alternative.

Warning: UV rays are not the only cause of cataracts, macular degeneration, pinguecula and pterygium. For example, macular degeneration can also be attributed to tobacco. A pterygium can result from wind or dust. Therefore, wearing UV-blocking eyewear may not be sufficient in preventing these eye diseases. But it is a step in the right direction.

What Is The Difference Between Monthly Contacts And Continuous Wear Contact Lenses?

by A. Nutt

Contact lenses are a great thing to have. That is because those who are able to wear them are not under the restrictions that eyeglasses put upon them. However, in recent years the entire world has changed for the contact lens wearer and that is the fact that new types of contacts have come out. Amongst these new types of contacts are those that you can wear for an extended period of time. They are monthly wear and continuous wear.

Both monthly and continuous wear contacts are called extended wear contacts. This is because they are able to be worn longer than your traditional contact lens. Traditional lenses come in daily wear, weekly wear, and bi-weekly wear. This means they have to be disposed of daily, weekly, or every two weeks. What you wear is up to you and what your tolerance is.

What are extended wear?

With the development of extended wear contacts, people don't have to change their contact lenses daily, weekly, or every two weeks. They can wear them for approximately 30 days before they have to throw them away. It may seem that they are more expensive, but it all reality you do save money.

However, not everyone can wear extended wear contacts and, if they are able to, they may find that one kind of extended wear does better for them than another. For example, some may want a monthly contact lens and another may want a continuous contact lens. But what's the difference?

Monthly vs. continuous

The difference between monthly contacts and continues wear contacts is not really all that different. The only difference is that monthly contacts need to be taken out every night. This is more or less the same as your traditional contact lens. You take them out and let them soak overnight so that they're clean the next morning.

Continuous wear contacts allow you to wear your contact lenses for 30 days straight without having to take them out. This means that you can sleep in them without having to worry about anything. After the 30 days is over, you simply throw them away. There is no having to clean and soak them every night like with monthly contact lenses.

However, there are some individuals unable to wear continuous wear. Some people have eyes that are more sensitive than others. Some individuals may also have issues with calcium buildup on the contact lens. This can cause issues such as Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis. This is when bacteria become trapped and an infection occurs. Those susceptible to this may not be able to wear continuous wear. They will be better off with the monthly contact that requires them to take the lenses out every night.

Which is best?

Which is best for you depends on what your eyes want. There are risks associated with all contact lenses. Infection is the main issue, so most people decide to try out the different types of contacts before committing. This is why your optometrist may find giving you trials before actually ordering is a good idea. That gives you the opportunity to figure out what is comfortable for you.

Besides, your eyes are very important. Without them, functioning would be very difficult. That's why it is very important for you to be able to find the contact lens that is right for you. Talk to your eye doctor about monthly contacts and continuous wear contacts. Let them tell you what risks exist for you and what your options may be for your particular situation. You might be quite pleased with the results that you receive.

Never Compromise on Quality of Your Eye Care Solutions With Contact Lens

by Suzanne Hughes
We can all be very fussy about the way we look and try to avoid looking ugly or unfashionable. There are many people who feel that eyeglasses are 'uncool'. Some find eyeglasses very difficult to maintain. For all such persons, switching over to contact lenses, which are inserted directly into the eyes, are the ideal solution.
Once used to the lenses, you will not feel them in your eye. They are lightweight, transparent and very effective.

For those who dare, colored contact lenses are available in the marketplace all over, and in many types and styles. For exmaple, there are many who have normal eyesight and yet wear contact lenses because the colored lenses look good on them.

Contact lenses are often preferred over glasses because:

• The appearance of the person remains the same.

• Contacts are easy to use and to carry around.

• Rainfall or heat does not affect contact lenses.

• Contact lenses actually enhance our scope of vision.

• Eye care solutions with contact lenses are very useful if you are a sports person or otherwise involved in physical activity that involves lot of running, jumping etc.

Your contact lenses may be a prescription or non-prescription. If you want to buy an inexpensive prescription, it is advisable to obtain one from your ophthalmologist. Do not hesitate to visit your ophthalmologist as this will help you avoid many complications.

If you want a non-prescription lens, simply spread the word amongst friends and relatives. This is the best way to locate a reputed seller of good quality and inexpensive non-prescription pairs.

You can get a lot of information about contacts on the Internet. Many websites offer information about eye care solutions with them, for example. And buying a non prescription lenses over the internet is possible even if you do not have a prescription issued by your ophthalmologist.

However, there is the risk of inadvertent purchase of inferior quality lenses. So when buying from an online store, make sure you buy good quality lenses that will not harm your vision.

Contacts bought off the counter or bought from online stores must not be used beyond their expiry date. They must be properly maintained until the date, as well, too. Normally, the buyer is supplied with the instructions for maintenance and disposal of them at the time of the purchase.

If you want to play it safe, then always go through your ophthalmologist for all eye care solutions . Your doctor would never recommend a seller with a bad reputation. Rely on your doctor and avoid all eye infections and other problems that may arise due to poor quality lenses.

Approaching your ophthalmologist for eye care solutions with contact lenses is the best solution. The other option available is to search for reviews of various products of the various manufacturers. The reviews may be available on the Internet or in magazines.

Do your research well and approach only reputed companies that offer good quality contact lenses. Such an approach will ensure your eye remains safe from all poor quality contact lenses.
