What Is Laser Eye Surgery?

by Sara Gidson
Laser Eye Surgery is a form of eye surgery that uses refraction and laser technology to treat astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia. Its inventor, Jose Barraquer was an ophthalmologist from Spain living in Colombia. Lasik involves a procedure technically termed as photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).

In 1980, a researcher named Rangaswamy Srinivasan was the first to suggest the use of laser technology in this surgery. This procedure is partially the reason for the lower degree of pain and recovery period for the patient.

The surgery basically includes three steps to reconstructing the cornea tissue. First, the flap that will be placed on the cornea surface is constructed. Then the cornea is readjusted keeping this flap above it. After this, the flap is placed accurately.

Patients have often been known to complain of dryness of the eyes until a period of six months after the surgery. It has been sighted as a permanent phenomenon by the Food and Drugs Association (FDA).

Here are some quick thing about laser eye surgery that you should know if you are investigating this type of surgery:
* When opting for laser eye surgery the patient must be aware of certain restrictions or conditions that need to be fulfilled before becoming an acceptable candidate for it.
* If you have a very high myopia condition, laser eye surgery requires a lot of cornea tissue removal, which lowers the chances of a better vision post-surgery.
* You also need to be an adult (as per your country's law) before you can opt for laser eye surgery treatment.
* Pregnancy can cause hindrance to the vision due to accumulation of fluid. This should not be taken as an indicator of deteriorating vision, requiring laser eye surgery. Also a point to note at this point is the harm caused by the recovery drugs to the conception.
* If your eyes are prone to irritation, dryness and if you are regular contact lens user, you will first need to treat these issues before being qualified enough to opt for laser eye surgery.
* Also, diseases that cause degeneration or immune failure (diabetes, HIV/AIDS and rheumatism) are not acceptable conditions for the surgery. However, this is subject to the seriousness of the illness and the doctor's discretion.

Vision after the surgery may be blurry and out of focus for some time. This should not be believed to be a permanent hindrance. With proper care and recovery medication, this can be improved to near perfection. With improving technology and assistance from modern equipment, the surgery has become very popular with a high success rate, especially in America and Canada.

When choosing the doctor who will perform laser eye surgery on you, make sure he is experienced enough and has a steady hand. Also, in case of over or under correction, you can easily opt for re-enhancement of the process to check it.

Depending on the advancement of the procedure, laser eye surgery can cost anywhere between $2,341 (in which Intralase is used with Wavefront technology), $2,105 (includes all procedures involving laser) and $1,662 (in which bladed instrument is used to construct the cornea flap instead of wavefront technology).

Understanding the Need For Reading Glasses

by Suzanne Hughes

We are often left wondering why we may need to have reading glasses. For those who are interested in knowing the reason, here it is in a nutshell below.

The lens of the eye is made up of cell fibers. As we reach 40, the cells that form the lens congregate together, and when more and more fibers unite, the lens becomes less elastic. Hence as the years pass, we often stress our eyes to look closely at words in the newspapers, yellow pages, online, etcetera.
Help for Stressed Eyes

The traditional answer to such an issue with the vision was the reading glass which evolved in to reading glasses over time. Moreover, many people who were nearsighted in their young age would discover that they must wear bifocal or trifocal lens as they grow older. Sometimes they might prefer to use reading glasses over their contact lens in a way to accommodate their nearsightedness and presbyopia.

More helpful tips for today's stressed eyes are:
1) If reading becomes difficult, approach an optometrist to have your eyes tested and ask about a prescription for reading glasses. If you are already using glasses for being nearsighted, ask about getting tested for a different or revised prescription for some changes in the lenses you are using.

2) If you tend to be holding the book far from your eyes to read them you need to realize that you probably need reading glasses. If your mom, granny, dad, uncle, aunt or neighbor is doing this, again you need to tell them it is time to check their eyes to have the reading glasses ordered.

3) Reading glasses are available in all types of stylish makes and models. So if you are fashion conscious, there is a frame that will look great on you. Consult your friends about what would look good on you. None of us can deny the new "Learned Man or Woman Look" that you will get when wearing your new reading glasses.

Truly there is nothing to feel bad about having to wear reading glasses, because otherwise, you might not be able to locate a place in the map or be able to read some words in a new book. Learn to look at things a different way. Think of people who are blind by birth, little children who have never known what vision means at all. By wearing just a pair of reading glasses you are back to seeing letters normally. In fact, you can feel better knowing that you are suffering any major eye diseases.

For those who may suffer even a temporary psychological depression upon hearing that they are requiring to wear reading glasses, look at it in a positive manner and you will be glad you are wearing them versus not being able to see. Gone are the days when you should feel bad about wearing reading glasses, rather you can instead now feel happy and feel stylish.

Reading glasses are available in many interesting and exciting models which can include tiny foldable readers that are as compact as a pen drive. They are also available in holders that can be kept compact in the wallet and have a of other styles and features. Shop around online and enough comparisons. Then try a nice new stylish pair of reading glasses today!

What Are Glasses And Contact Lenses Made Of?

by AStratton

Eye glasses and contacts are amazing products. They enable much of the world's population to see! They have undergone a long and fruitful history throughout time and today glasses and contacts are both made of different materials. This is a wonderful advantage, because it allows optical labs and contact lens manufacturers to provide different people with the right kind of fit and durability.
Eye Glasses

These are the oldest type of lens materials available. They still offer clear vision and scratch resistance at a low price, but the lenses are heavier than any other material made by optical labs today. As these lenses are much thicker, the stronger your prescription is, optical labs recommend glass ones only for minor vision corrections.

- Plastic

Plastic is also a very economical choice and provides very good visual clarity, and these reasons make them the most popular choice today in the United States. They are much lighter than glass lens but can still get rather thick for high prescription powers. One added benefit of plastic over glass is that plastic can be easily tinted to be made into sunglasses.

- Polycarbonate

These are the second most popular choices in the nation because they are extremely safe, light, and very difficult to break. In fact, studies have shown that polycarbonate lenses are more than 10 times impact resistant than glass. They are the most recommended choice for children especially for this reason. They are also much thinner than regular plastic and are 100 percent effective in protecting your eyes from harmful ultra violet (UV) rays.

- High Index Lenses

High index lenses can actually be made of either glass or plastic but they are different because they are the thinnest material in the market. They measure 20 to 65 percent thinner than plastic and the plastic high index lenses still offer complete UV protection.

Contacts

- Hard -Rigid Glass Permeable

Contacts started out being made of glass over 120 years ago, but then started being made out of polymethyl methacrylate to make them more comfortable. However, the problem was that they did not let any oxygen through the contact to the eye, causing all sorts of negative side effects. Now hard lenses are made of polymers that are gas permeable. They still create the right shape on the cornea to make clear vision and they allow oxygen to the surface of the eyeball. They last longer than soft contacts and protect the eyes from chemicals and fumes.

- Soft

Soft contact lenses are made of hydrogel or polymacon and they are much more comfortable on the eye than the rigid hard ones. It also allows adequate oxygen to the eyeball and most are disposable to be thrown away after a few weeks to a few months.

There are plenty of great options when it comes to choosing material for your optical needs. Optical labs and contact lens manufacturers work hard to provide the best and most varied selection possible to find exactly the right fit for you!

What Are the Best Recommended Cleaning Tips to Maintain Your Contact Lenses?

by A. Nutt

Every person that wears contact lenses or are thinking about obtaining some contact lenses for vision correction or a fashion statement should understand that proper care and maintenance for your contact lenses is very important for the health and safety of your eyes. Caring for your contact lenses will only take a few minutes of your time each day and will help keep your contact lenses in excellent condition for a number of years. Many people prefer wearing contact lenses to wearing glasses and with proper care and maintenance, wearing your contact lenses can be just as safe and hassle free.

The most important part of contact lens maintenance is making sure that your hands are clean and free of debris before handling your contact lenses. Particles of dirt or hair on your hands can adhere to the surface of the contact lenses and scratch the surface of the eye when the contacts are put in, causing pain and discomfort until the contact lens can be removed. Any viral material or bacteria that are on the hands can also be transferred to the surface of the eye by the contact lens and can cause illness or infection that may require medical treatment to cure. The hands should be thoroughly washed with hot water and soap before handling the contact lenses out of the case or out of the eye.

The next step in proper care for contact lenses is to use a sterile contact lens solution for cleaning the contact lenses. These solutions can be purchased at any neighborhood grocery store, drug store, or mass merchandiser. There are many different brands of contact lens solutions available from different manufacturers and it is up to the person to decide which brand they like to use the best. Using this solution, the contacts should be rinsed before placing them in the eyes and after they have been taken out of the eyes to remove any particles of dirt and to disinfect them. The solution is also used in the contact lens case when storing the contact lenses to prevent them from drying out and provide a barrier from infectious agents.

The contact lenses should be removed from the eyes according to the schedule of the manufacturer of the contact lenses. There are many different varieties of contact lenses can be purchased and the type of contact lenses that are purchased will dictate how often they need to be removed and cleaned. Some contact lenses need to be taken out every night at bedtime for cleaning and disinfection while some other types of contact lenses can be left on the eyes for a week at a time before they will need to be removed.

There are also a number of other solutions and devices that can be used for cleaning the contact lenses if the person chooses to use them. One of the most common solutions used are the protein removal solutions that removes any of the proteins that are found on the surface of the eye or in tears from the surface of the contact lenses to prevent build up and clouding on the contact lens. There are also contact lens cases that plug into an outlet so that the case will slowly agitate the contact lenses during the night, helping to wash anything off of the surface of the lenses. Proper contact lens care can extend the life of your contact lenses and protect your eyes from many of the complications associated with contact lens use.

What Color Contacts Will Go Well With Your Hair Color?

by A. Nutt

Many people love to wear color contacts. There is something special about being able to change your eye color. This is especially true for those who change their hair color, but it may not compliment their eye color so well. But what color of contacts goes best with each hair color? Will more than one work or will just one do the job? Those are great questions, which is why it is important to know the answers.
Brown hair

Those with brown hair tend to have varying eye colors, but most commonly their eyes are brown. Next to that, you'll find individuals with blue eyes or hazel eyes. Green and gray tend to be rare with those with brown hair, although it can happen.

If you're someone with brown hair who was born with brown eyes and you want something different, you can try a blue. Blue tends to go very well with brown hair. Depending on the shade of brown, you may want to try hazel as well. This is usually for those who may have lighter brown hair with a red tinge to it.

Blonde hair

Those with blonde hair are most commonly born with blue or green eyes. You will also see those with brown eyes. Those with blue or brown eyes may want to go for a green to go with their blonde hair. Then again, someone with blue or green eyes may decide to have brown. However, many are in agreement that blue or green color contacts may go best with blonde hair.

There are also some rather exotic contact lens colors. There are bright green colors, reds, purples, and so much more. You may want your color to look natural or you may want it to be obvious that you're using colored contacts.

Black hair

Those with black hair may choose to go with a lighter contact lens color. You will notice that blue eyes go great with black hair. So if you're someone with dark eyes, you may want to lighten it up a bit. You can also try gray, which may look rather different. However, for those who really want to be different, it is said that purple contact lenses can look quite interesting on an individual.

Red hair

For those with red hair who have blue or green eyes, trying blue or green contacts may be the way to go. But, of course, if you have blue eyes you're not going to try blue contacts unless they are of a different shade. The same goes for green eyes. You can get rather creative, but everyone is more or less in agreement that red hair and green eyes make for a great combination.

Be creative

Nevertheless, you can be creative. There are so many different colors out there. There are even contact lenses that have shapes on them. You have probably seen someone who looks like they have green cat eyes or they have lightning bolts in their eyes. It is obvious that they're wearing contacts, but they do it so that they look different. They like to experiment with different colors and more or less make people look at them.

However, you may not be satisfied with your natural eye color or you are changing your hair color. When either one of these things are an issue for you, you know that colored contacts offer you a viable option. You shouldn't have to be dissatisfied with something that you can change. Although you can't have surgery to change your eye color, you can at least purchase a contact lens that can.

Why You Should Not Wear Glasses

by Alice deMont

Are you wearing glasses all the time? Do you read in glasses? Well, here are the reasons why you should not. I understand that it's not easy and sometimes not even feasible to discard glasses completely but do yourself a favour and spend at least part of the day without glasses.

Ok, here are what the minus glasses do to us (the minus is the worse and does most the damage so I'll concentrate on that).

They lock our sight in a fixed state defined by your prescription and it leads to stiffening of the muscle and staring. Staring is a sign of bad vision.

The minus glasses makes everything look smaller and the objects look closer so while you are doing close work like reading and writing your lens tries to accommodate more than usual. That leads to near-point stress.

The plus-glasses theory is based on this fact. In fact its proponents recommend you wear plus glasses while you are doing any close work because the plus glasses in contrast make everything look bigger and farther away and that relieves or eliminates near-point stress.

They don't look pretty. I know some of you think that they look distinguished in glasses but believe me that is not the case. A person always looks better without glasses. That scholar look is a malicious propaganda.

They sweat in the wet weather. It's just plain nuisance.

They makes everything look distorted. This is especially noticeable if you have higher degrees of myopia.

They limit your visual field so you ability to shift naturally slows down.

They make you dependant. That, of course, is not good.

Most of these reasons apply equally well to contact lenses and while some problems with contacts are eliminated the other ones arise. Namely, contact lenses cut the flow of oxygen to your eyes and that can lead to serious problems later on. And perhaps the most annoying problem with lenses is that you can't take them off and on easily like you do with glasses.

So I suggest you take off your glasses whenever you can like walking down the street, riding a car as a passenger and if you can, read without glasses. If you wear less than -2 D. take them off and start practicing natural vision improvement methods. The vision can be regained, the earlier you start, the better your chances are and the quicker will be the improvement.

Benefits Of LASIK Eye Surgery

by Tong Lin

The benefits of LASIK eye surgery are so many that you may not want to wear your spectacles anymore. Before you take an appointment with the surgeon, let¡¯s tell you more about these benefits.
Quick Results

This is one of the most wonderful benefits of laser eye surgery. The patients¡¯ vision improves significantly within minutes of the surgery! Although it takes about 6 months to obtain perfect visual acuity, during the follow-up eye examination, the patients usually show almost perfect vision. The eye check-up is done a day after the surgery. You¡¯re gonna throw away your spectacles or contact lenses immediately after LASIK surgery!

Freedom From Spectacles/Contacts

For those who have been wearing spectacles or contacts for many years, it has become a way of life. However, deep inside their heart, they still wish for a life without spectacles. LASIK eye surgery fulfills your wish.

After this surgery, you need not worry about the daily chore of cleaning your contacts, wearing them, and taking care of them. You need not worry about your eyes getting too dry to let your contacts fall off. You can even wear your eye make-up without the fear of it irritating your eyes and damaging your contacts. Great!

You get freedom from the daily contact lens care, purchase of solutions, creating space for the bulky spectacle case or solution bottle in your baggage while traveling, and other such sort of cumbersome processes. And don¡¯t forget the amount of money you¡¯ve been spending till now in buying those solutions and changing your contacts every 6 months, or in getting your choice spectacles. And if you have a habit of wearing disposable contacts, you really need to think seriously about laser surgery. You can¡¯t go on spending dollars on these expensive pair of ¡°polymer eyes.¡±

Increased Self-Confidence

This is one of the biggest things that can happen to a patient opting for vision correction the laser way. The level of self-confidence can alter your life. There are many people who hate their specs hanging over their noses. Everyday, they drag themselves to the office or marketplace with a stooping self-esteem. How do they look? What will people think about their appearance? Are they attractive enough in specs?

Thanks to laser surgery, tens of thousands of patients have got back their lost self-esteem. And this is especially true for patients with disoriented vision. They used to find it hard to move around in dimly lit restaurants and clubs, or even approach that sexy blonde on the dance floor. How embarrassing it is to topple over a chair or slip down the stairs due to disoriented vision! With eye surgery, your social life gets a new high.

Chance To Try Out New Activities

Would you ever think of skydiving, kayaking, swimming, or playing rugby with your specs on? And what about those who dream to build a career in aviation, law enforcement, and other such fields?

Had it not been for the benefits of LASIK eye surgery, they would be picking up the shattered pieces of their dreams with long faces!

Contact Lenses For Young People

by Suzanne Hughes

Hi! You look beautiful with your eyeglasses. Want to be able to see in the rain, though, like when you're playing sports?
Contact lenses have flooded the market. They can be easily placed on the cornea of your eyes, enabling vision even in the rain. And while they may be tough to put in your eyes at first, it gets easier with practice.

Here are more points to ponder about contacts:

1) Chemists from Czechoslovakia invented the contact lens in 1961. The main advantage with contact lens is the comfort factor.

2) Each person has different power in the eye and therefore contact lenses with varying powers are available with the eye care practitioner.

3) If your eye care practitioner detects astigmatism in your eyes, he may gives you toric soft contact lenses to correct the problem.

4) Contact lenses come in different shades. Choose one with your eye color or a complimentary tone, your choice.

5) Even if you have the problem of dry eyes, there are many different combinations of contact lens and solutions.

6) Cleaning, the quality of lens and wearing habits go hand in hand in providing your eyes with good care.

7) Contact lenses like the extreme H2O, biomedics XC and proclear compatibles have been designed specially for dry eyes.

8) If you are a sportsman or woman, contact lenses can help; they provide a clear stable vision and wider field of view than eyeglasses. Contact lenses also don't get fogged up or slip down during games.

9) Some rigid gas permeable contact lenses allow dust to accumulate below the surface and create an irritation to the eye. This problem can be solved by using contact lens drops or rinsing the lens with solution. Or go soft; soft contact lenses fit closer to the eyes.

10) Negligence in cleaning the lenses may blur the eyesight and may develop into an itching sensation, leading to possible infection. Enzymatic cleaners help remove protein deposits from contact lenses, thereby keeping them clear and transparent.

11) You are advised by the eye care practitioner not to share your contact lens with others.

12) You should not wear your lenses for longer periods than your eye doctor recommends because there are chances that you may deprive your eyes of the correct oxygen supply leading to possible damage of the cornea.

13) Rigid gas permeable contact lenses have their advantages too. They help in controlling myopia in children. They provide sharper vision than soft contact lenses and are more durable. They are economical too. Rigid gas permeable lenses correct near sightedness, far sightedness and astigmatism. Hybrid contact lenses are a combination of Rigid Gas Permeable lens at the center, providing a clear and crisp vision and greater comfort.

14) Colored contact lenses can be used by teens who don't need to correct vision but want to enhance the eye focus or change the eye color. For those particular about ultimate convenience, daily disposable types of contact lens may be the best option.

15) Awesome facts about contacts are:

- Your switching over to contact lens can complement your features and correct your vision at the same time.

- You can accentuate your outfit while giving yourself extraordinarily clear vision.

- With cool colored contact lenses, you will surely be envied by your friends.

Imagine wearing a fresh pair of contact lens every morning, use them throughout the day and disposing of them at night. By this evening, you can have an appointment with the best eye care practitioner and start using contact lenses. I guarantee you will feel much better and look more beautiful.

What Are the Most Comfortable Contact Lenses on the Market?

by A. Nutt

Leonardo da Vinci was said to have invented the concept of the contact lens in 1508. Since the penning of his historic and innovative Codex of the eye, Manual D, the contact lens has greatly evolved and is the option of choice for corrective wear.

Developed as an option for men and women who needed visual enhancement but didn't like to appearance or hassle associated with glasses, the original lenses were originally very hard. They also had a myriad of drawbacks, like popping off the cornea and getting lost. A version of the earlier hard contacts lens still exists today, and are now called gas permeable (GP or RGPs or rigid gas permeable). Unlike their predecessors, they allowed oxygen to pass through the lens to the eye, which makes them healthier to wear.

Unfortunately, like their predecessors, these hard contacts are still a bit uncomfortable.

Enter soft contact lenses, which were also gas permeable and far easier on the eyes. Yet and still, even among the softer lenses, some are more comfortable than others.

So, what kind of contact lens offers the highest comfort?

Disposable contact lenses

Disposable contact lenses come in single day, weekly, or monthly use. These contact lenses often offer a higher degree of comfort because and there is less of a chance of protein buildup and warping, which can feel scratchy to the eye. To date, many soft contact lens buyers say that these lenses are the best ones on the market in regards to ease of wear, however, they may not be the ultimate option for true vision correction.

Color contact lenses

Color contact lenses can be fairly easy on the eye if they are the soft variety. Although most color contacts are used to produce an aesthetic effect, ease of use is still very important. Because these contacts are most often come in the soft lens, they are generally very comfortable. Some companies even make them with a prescription in them, although the prescription may not be as strong as with plain lenses.

Gas permeable lenses

As stated before, gas permeable lenses are often harder but with the proper fitting they can be a bit healthier and easier to wear than soft contact lenses. This is due to the fact that they allow oxygen into the cornea, which is important since this delicate part of the eye needs oxygen to 'breath'. For this reason, they are also called the 'breathable' contact lens.

Hybrid lenses

Hybrid lenses can offer the best of both the gas permeable and disposable contact lens. These lenses are often comprised of a GP center and softer outer ring. This makes the contact lenses a bit easier to wear while giving all the benefits of gas permeable contacts. The lenses are a great option fro people who suffer from astigmatism as they may not be able to wear certain soft lenses.

All of the above lenses have their pros and cons, and in the end, it is really up to you to decide which type best fits your lifestyle. Some people who are very active seek soft lenses because they stay in place far easier than gas permeable. On the other hand, others have vision correction problems that soft contacts can't fix and need to get gas permeable or hybrids.

If you are interested in getting contacts, or just want to switch to a far more accommodating brand, be sure to make an appointment with your ophthalmologist. He will be best able to tell you what would be a good fit, and knows which contact lenses have been reputed to yield the highest amount of comfort.
